Sarah's Tolkien Quotes

I am currently posting Tolkien quotes in my ez-profile and various signatures. Retired quotes are stored here, with comments (and sometimes rants). I enjoy making comments. ;) At the moment I am focusing on quotes from The Two Towers.

Note 12/7/03: I have more or less given up on updating this page, but there are a whole lot more quotes that I recently compiled for a contest: The other quote list.

Profile Quotes

"O Boromir! The Tower of Guard shall ever northward gaze
To Rauros, golden Rauros-falls, until the end of days.
" -Aragorn, The Two Towers (Chapter 1, "The Departure of Boromir")
Note: In Middle-Earth, you're supposed to say something poetic when someone important dies. The next time you see Fellowship, imagine Aragorn and Legolas breaking out into song. *sarah grin*

"They are proud and wilful, but they are true-hearted, generous in thought and deed; bold but not cruel; wise but unlearned; writing no books but singing many songs, after the matter of the children of Men before the Dark Years." -Aragorn, of the Rohirrim, The Two Towers (Chapter 2, "The Riders of Rohan")
Note: The people of Rohan are called the "Rohirrim".

"O Gondor, Gondor! Shall Men behold the Silver Tree,
Or West Wind blow again between the Mountain and the Sea?
" -Aragorn, The Two Towers (Chapter 2, "The Riders of Rohan")
Note: Aragorn was actually a great hero in Gondor (under another name)...under Boromir's grandfather. "Strider" is older than he looks; Fellowship ends just before his eighty-eighth birthday!

"Elendil! I am Aragorn son of Arathorn, and am called Elessar, the Elfstone, Dúnadan, the heir of Isildur Elendil's son of Gondor. Here is the Sword that was Broken and is forged again! Will you aid me or thwart me? Choose swiftly!" -Aragorn, upon meeting Éomer, The Two Towers (Chapter 2, "The Riders of Rohan")
Note: Aragorn's sword, Elendil's Narsil reforged, is called Andúril, the Flame of the West. And it's "the Sword that was Broken", not "the Sword that-stayed-broken-while-its-bearer-acted-wishy-washy".

"I have passed through fire and deep water since we parted. I have forgotten much that I thought I knew, and learned again much that I had forgotten. I can see many things far off, but many things that are close at hand I cannot see." -Gandalf, The Two Towers (Chapter 5, "The White Rider")

Signature Quotes

"Do we walk in legends or on the green earth in the daylight?" -Éomer, The Two Towers (Chapter 2, "The Riders of Rohan")

"For not we but those who come after will make the legends of our time." -Aragorn, The Two Towers (Chapter 2, "The Riders of Rohan")

"It seems that you are come on the wings of song out of the forgotten days." -Háma, to Aragorn, The Two Towers (Chapter 6, "The King of the Golden Hall")

"Elves made all the old words: they began it." -Treebeard, The Two Towers (Chapter 4, "Treebeard")

"Not idly do the leaves of Lórien fall." -Aragorn, The Two Towers (Chapter 2, "The Riders of Rohan")

"What news from the North, Riders of Rohan?" -Aragorn, The Two Towers (Chapter 2, "The Riders of Rohan")

All of these quotes belong to J.R.R. Tolkien (or his family), seeing as he's the guy who wrote The Lord of the Rings. You knew that already. But the images are Copyright © SarahStar/ezSarah, 2002. All Rights Reserved. *sarah grin*
